Claret Cup Recipe - Bordeaux Red Wine Punch
Claret is the original name of Bordeaux, the red wine blend from France. This Claret Cup punch recipe was very popular in the 1800s, and was often served at parties. It is in essence an early sangria!
Ingredients
1 bottle Bordeaux
1 lemon cut very thin
4 Tbsp powered sugar
1/4 tsp grated nutmeg
2oz brandy
3oz sherry wine
1 1-liter bottle of soda water
Prepare a large bowl or pitcher. Add in the Bordeaux, lemon, sugar, nutmeg, brandy, and sherry. Right before serving add in soda water and ice.
It's very neat for me to think about Jane Austen and her family sitting around and enjoying Claret Cup. Certainly in the party scenes Jane writes about in Pride & Prejudice, this is exactly what her heroes and heroines would have been drinking!
From The Home Cook Book, 1877
To turn this into a single-glass sangria recipe, a typical assumption is that one 750ml bottle of wine yields four large glasses of wine. Divide all ingredients shown by four. If you're making just one glass worth you probably don't want to wait for the overnight soaking. If the mixture doesn't soak, you just won't get as much of the fruit / berry flavors permeating the sangria.

Note: I created these sangria recipes and have had them online for years. If you find similar sangria recipes elsewhere, it's because someone copied my idea. I do appreciate it when visitors write in to warn me about the plagiarism - but usually there's not much I can do about it! What's really funny is when they copy my design right down to my sangria pitcher. That's a bit much :)
